Keyword Domains
A keyword domain is essential to your online success
Most small business owners start out in their initial website business with very little thought or structure to their long term plans. They are trying to do the best that they can, with what they have to work with, and mainly rely on what they know of “brick and mortar” business skills, to just survive. They have no idea what a keyword domain is or how valuable it can be to their business. By the time they find out, they have spent many long hours and financial resources wasting valuable time developing a website that is behind the curve already.
First mistake
The first mistake that businesses make is to name their website (www.thebusinessname.com) like they would name a traditional company, or opening up a new store in another city. The single most difficult thing to achieve in a successful website is traffic, and there are just so many business cards that you can pass out with your website address on it, before you run out of gas. That line of thinking is “old school” and will get you nowhere in a hurry with a new website. Sure, it is a great way to consistently get the word out about your new company website to the people that you come in contact with (and I highly encourage you to do that at every opportunity), but it is only a drop in the bucket compared to the 300+ million searchers that we have access to on the internet that can be knocking on your door tomorrow through the search engines.
What’s inside a domain name?
Let’s say we are starting a new company that sells marble and granite countertops and trying to think of a new business name. Our “old school” way of thinking, would push me to think of using my family name or possibly another catchy name that might be easily remembered. For an example, let’s say we searched a domain registrar and found something not being used. Something catches our eye and we register “JWMStoneworks.com” for our future business (since my initials are JWM). In this instance, our keyword is JWM Stoneworks, for all practical purposes.
But what most businesses don’t realize is that unless you are spending your days handing out business cards to everyone that you can find, the potential internet customer does not find websites the way a traditional business is found. They “Google it” for more information.
Google is KING when it comes to traffic!
They developed the first successful search algorithm that accurately targeted relevant topics that users were searching for, returning those results in a clean formatted way that new users could understand, and that success helped Google begin to dominate the search market. When a user searches for a keyword term on the search engine, the search engine has stored results of the websites across the internet and returns the most relevant results. And I can already tell you, that there will not be many users who are searching for “JWM Stoneworks” while they are looking for marble and granite countertops. We are not going to get any results for that domain, without a lot of time, energy and money to get there.

Domain Appraisal USD $1,500
Not only is the domain worth $1,500 before we ever build a website, we can see that there are 1,020 US searches per month on this exact phrase. Where would you rather start out?
Since the search engines give bonus points to the domain with the EXACT PHRASE MATCH, it is highly likely that we would go straight to the top position once we began posting relevant articles and building back links to other authority websites. Get 3-4 of these related keyword domains all pointing traffic to your main site that you spent so much time and energy building (JWMStoneworks.com) and it just might work out after all.
Keyword Domains are like waterfront property in real estate. After all, what we’re talking about here is digital real estate anyway. It’s all about Location, Location, Location.
